The concept and craft
The Kurbits tradition from Dalarna is known for its bold lines and mythic storytelling, wrapping naturally around the speaker’s iconic shape.
Designed internally by David Samuelson as a custom gift for a colleague with roots in Dalarna, this unique piece combined Swedish folk art with clean product design. Flowing painted lines, a traditional Kurbits color palette, custom fret piping, wooden knobs, and turned copper feet brought Swedish heritage to life, turning a familiar object into something rare and culturally loaded.
Studio execution and process
I handled the whole visual process in the studio, setting up the flash lights, taking the photos, and doing the final retouching.
The main goal was simply to capture clean images that did justice to the detailed hand painting and material accents. Beyond making a nice photo set for a farewell gift, it turned into a solid internal blueprint. It proved that we could concept, build, and shoot custom projects like this entirely on our own in house.
Summary
Curves of Kurbits was a fun personal project that brought together craftsmanship and everyday product design.
Handling the art direction, photography, and post-production under one roof established a clean approach for documenting custom pieces, inspiring the team to rethink our in-house capabilities.
